Capsule Endoscopy Preparation

If you are having a Patency Capsule procedure prior to a Capsule Endoscopy, please follow the Patency Capsule Prep prior to the Capsule Endoscopy prep.

Please Note:

  • If you are diabetic, please hold your oral diabetic medications the morning of the Capsule Endoscopy.
  • If you take iron or vitamins containing iron, please hold for 4 days prior to your Capsule Endoscopy.
  • If you smoke, please abstain from smoking 24 hours prior to undergoing Capsule Endoscopy.

The Day Before Your Capsule Endoscopy

After lunch Start a clear liquid diet. See the list of clear liquids.

At 7 PM Mix 34 grams of Polyethylene glycol (PEG) 3350 laxative such as MiraLAX, Dulcolax Balance or Equate ClearLax in 16 ounces of Gatorade any flavor except those with red color and drink. G2 is a Gatorade product with less sugar that we recommend. You may substitute an equal quantity of Crystal Light Drink mix or other non-carbonated clear liquid.

At 10 PM Do not eat or drink except for necessary medication with a sip of water.

Examples of a Clear Liquid Diet

Clear liquids are any liquid that you can see through. Do not consume any red liquids or alcoholic beverages.

CLEAR LIQUIDS INCLUDE:

  • Water or Vitamin Water (no red colored water)
  • Coffee or tea without creamer
  • Jell-O (no red colored jello)
  • Sport drinks like Gatorade, G2, Powerade or Propel (no red colored drinks)
  • Popsicles (no red colored popsicles)
  • Broth or bouillon
  • Ensure Clear Peach Flavor
  • Carbonated beverages like Coke, 7-up, or Mountain Dew
  • Apple juice or white grape juice

The Day of Your Capsule Endoscopy

  • Have nothing to eat or drink before your Capsule Endoscopy. Do not take any medication beginning 2 hours before undergoing Capsule Endoscopy.
  • Arrive at the office dressed in loose fitting, two-piece clothing.
  • Please do not wear lipstick to the appointment, as it can smear the lens of the camera.

After Swallowing the Capsule Endoscopy

  • Do not eat or drink for at least 2 hours. You may have clear liquids 2 hours after swallowing the capsule and you may take any of your normal medications.
  • After 4 hours, you may have a light snack.

Return to Dayton Gastro at 4:30 PM

  • After the examination is completed and the equipment is removed, you may return to your normal diet.
